« Ever since he got his book, Hugo wants to be a firefighter every single day. He even explained to me why the truck is red. I actually learned something. »

№ 02 · Our promise

Becoming a firefighter for the length of a book is a serious thing. Our creative team works to a strict editorial code: what it's willing to show children about the job — and what it refuses to put in their hands.

No gratuitous pyrotechnics. Just a real profession, told with respect, at a child's level.

, on every Firefighter for a Day.

What we do

  • An emotional arc from self-doubt to mission confidence
  • A captain who partners with the child — guides, never smothers
  • 3 real facts about firefighters, woven into the story — never taught as a lesson
  • The detailed red fire truck, the helmet just a little too big
  • A backlit glow that puts the hero's silhouette centre stage

What we won't do

  • Serious injuries depicted in detail
  • Frightening fires with visible victims
  • Any character death or disappearance
  • Scenes of uncontrolled panic
  • The hero saving the day alone like a superhero

№ 02b · The book up close

Your child pushes open the fire station doors, pulls on the gear, and climbs into the big red truck. Not a story about a firefighter — they actually become one, for a full day of adventure alongside the captain.

There are kids who stop dead in their tracks when the red fire engine drives past. The siren, the reflective stripes, those helmeted silhouettes glimpsed behind the window — it captivates them completely. Our personalised firefighter book for kids takes that fascination seriously and turns it into a real day of adventure, seen through a child's eyes.

In *Firefighter for a Day*, your child arrives at the fire station on an ordinary morning. Their name is woven into the whole story, and their face — created from the photo you send us — becomes the hero's face on every illustration. The helmet is a little too big, the boots slip slightly, but the pride is already there, visible in the way they stand. It's them, unmistakably.

At the heart of the story: the captain, a warm, experienced character who guides the child without ever being overprotective. The emotional arc follows a simple, powerful path — from that first flicker of doubt facing the uniform, to the confidence that grows once the mission is completed as a team. No lesson recited out loud. Just a look, a word, and off they go together.

This firefighter storybook for kids is also a window onto the real world. Three genuine facts are worked naturally into the narrative:

  • why fire engines are red (a tradition born from a practical, economic reason in the early 20th century),
  • why firefighters always work as a team (an absolute safety rule),
  • why they still train even on days with no fire (strength is built quietly, over time).

No dry facts dumped on the page — just details the hero discovers while living their day. Kids love these genuine little secrets: they give them something real to tell their friends at school the next day.

Landscape A4 format (29.7 × 21 cm), sturdy hardcover cover the same for every age, 28 or 48 pages depending on the version you choose. Versions adapted to your child's stage:

  • Ages 0-2: a baby's-eye-view visit to the fire station, one tiny gesture, plenty of red fire engine.
  • Ages 3-5: short text, generous illustrations, pure fascination with the truck and the gear.
  • Ages 6-8: teamwork takes on real weight, genuine facts settle in.
  • Ages 9 and up: more nuance, a true sense of mission, more room for the hero's own reflection.

Giving a gift for a child who loves firefighters means giving them a real day of courage — to a child who already has everything it takes to be an everyday hero.

№ 04 · Stories you can tell

Visual preview of the The Visit archetype

Push open the fire station door, touch the truck, do one tiny firefighter task, and head home proud.

  1. The red fire engine is there, enormous. The child places a hand on it.
  2. A helmet far too big, one small task to help. Nothing more.
  3. Time to go home. The captain simply says: see you tomorrow, little firefighter.

For every book, our creative team selects the arc that best captures your duo — the one you'll recognise the moment you read it together.

№ 05 · FAQs

The most common questions about Firefighter for a Day — answered honestly, with nothing left out.

Are the illustrations of the truck and uniform realistic?

Yes — our illustrators research real firefighting gear (helmet, reflective jacket, boots) and real vehicles (pumper trucks, ladder trucks). The book isn't a technical manual, but the look and feel stays true to life so that kids who dream of the job will recognise everything they've spotted in the real world.

Does the book contain scary or dangerous situations?

No — the adventure is exciting but never frightening. No injured victims, no terrifying inferno, no panic. The missions are pitched just right for children: a cat stuck in a tree, a false alarm that gets a laugh, a team rescue. Pride and team spirit always come first — the thrill is kept firmly in check.

My child isn't set on becoming a firefighter — will they still enjoy it?

Almost certainly yes. At its heart, the book is a story about a day of adventure alongside a trusted adult (the captain). Lots of children love it for the story itself, with no career ambitions required. If your child's passion lies somewhere else, take a look at our other career adventure books — each one is built on the same model of shared adventure and discovery.

What are the delivery times?

Our express delivery takes 7 days within mainland UK — the safe option if you need the book by a specific date. Standard delivery takes 10 to 15 working days when there's no rush. In a real hurry? The digital version (PDF) is ready within 24 hours of your order being confirmed. For international deliveries, allow extra time depending on the destination. You'll receive a tracking number by email as soon as your order ships. Any questions? Drop us a line at hello@realbigstories.com.

What size is the book, and how many pages does it have?

The book is A4 landscape format (29.7 × 21 cm when closed) — perfect for reading together side by side or laying flat on a table. The standard version has 10 illustrated chapters, plus an introduction and conclusion, coming to around 28 pages in total. The long version is nearly twice that, with 20 chapters and roughly 48 pages. Each chapter features a full-page illustration paired with text tailored to your child's age.

What's the print and paper quality like?

Printed on thick, premium matte paper. The hardcover is sturdy and the same high quality across all age ranges. The binding is sewn and glued to last — this is a book built to be read a hundred times, not to gather dust at the back of a drawer.

Can I make changes after placing my order?

Yes — as long as your book hasn't gone to print yet, which is usually within the first few hours after ordering. Get in touch as quickly as possible at hello@realbigstories.com with your order number and the change you need (a misspelled name, a photo to swap, a character to adjust). Once printing has started, we're unable to make any further changes.

What if I'm not happy with the result?

If something isn't right — a printing defect, a quality issue, or an illustration that doesn't look like your child — contact us as soon as possible after receiving your order at hello@realbigstories.com. We'll either reprint or give you a full refund, no questions asked. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, we make it right.

Are my photos and personal data safe?

Yes — your photos are used only to create the book. They're never shared, never sold, never used for anything else, and you can delete them anytime from your account or by simply asking us. All our providers (hosting, illustration generation, payment, printing) are fully GDPR-compliant.

How much can I personalize the book?

Far beyond just the name. Your child's face is illustrated from your photos, and appears on every page. You also choose the story world, the plot, the characters around them (family, friends, pet) and the little details of appearance. The book stays fully editable until you approve the preview: you read through the text, request any changes, and printing only starts once you're happy.
